Volcanic scenery, mountains of snow
The ski area is in fact 4 miles from the town of Mammoth Lakes and, as a consequence, much of the accommodation at the base of the ski slopes has the advantage of being ski in/out. Reached from Reno, LA or San Francisco it is set in breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery. This is not surprising as Mammoth is a volcano – so be sure to enjoy the hot springs at the end of a day spent in deep beautiful snow.

Rising to an impressive 11,000 feet, Mammoth is one of America’s largest ski areas with 3500 acres of skiing. It has a very long season – from November until sometimes July – and has amazingly consistent heavy snowfalls. Yes, this is one of THE places to go for steep and deep skiing. However, skiing in Mammoth is not just exclusive preserve of experts – the ski school has won accolades for its programmes and the beautifully groomed cruising runs make this an excellent resort for beginners and intermediates. There is an almost mind blowing choice of places to eat out – look out for Slocums Grill, Angel’s for great value and Chart House for good seafood. The Town of Mammoth Lakes is located in the heart of California's Eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range. Mammoth Lakes is approx 325 miles north of Los Angeles, and about the same distance east of San Francisco. Mammoth is one of North America's largest ski areas and is set in breathtakingly beautiful mountain scenery. Its altitude and position in the High Sierras helps it to average more than 30 feet of snowfall every single year. Mammoth's 3500 acres of skiing make it one of the largest ski areas in North America and offers skiing to suit all abilities. Skiing in Mammoth is suited to both mixed ability groups and family skiing groups.
The drive to Mammoth is one of the most interesting in all the United States. Along Highway 395 are incredible geologic formations, historic salt mines, and the sites of early Hollywood western movies, both the lowest and highest points in the United States out of opposite car windows - Death Valley and Mt. Whitney at Lone Pine. The snow-frosted crown of Mt Whitney at 14,494 feet, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States makes for a spectacular scenic interlude on this drive.
In partnership with the Canadian resort development company Intrawest, of Whistler-Blackcomb fame, the ski resort of Mammoth continues to enjoy constant improvements in its infrastructure with a new pedestrianised village, which gives the resort a central focus and has an excellent range of restaurants, bars and shops and nightclubs. A free local shuttle service connects different parts of the resort and buses arrive every 15 minutes.
Mammoth Mountain is the winter playground of folks from Los Angeles. They turn up on a Friday night and leave on Sunday afternoon, turning the resort into a real party town with the bars and restaurants buzzing. You also have June Mountain 30 minutes away - smaller and more intimate than Mammoth, yet a gem of a resort in its own right boasting unsurpassed views over the lakes below. This makes a good trip at weekends when Mammoth tends to get busier from its Los Angeles clientele and queues can build up.
Skiing in Mammoth takes place on one huge mountain. That's why they call it Mammoth. It offers both on and off piste skiing in diverse and varied terrain and has plenty of non-skiing activities.
