Enjoy some champagne powder at its best
Steamboat has some of the best quality snow in Colorado, now widely known as ‘champagne powder’, as well as having a huge ski area to please all levels of skiers. Steamboat also has the second highest snow record in Colorado with an average 355 inches falling each year, resulting in a snow sure holiday. The lively base village of Steamboat is perfect after a long day of knee deep powder with a huge variety of bars and restaurants that will suit all tastes.

Spread over 3 mountains, the resort is especially good for intermediates and Steamboat boasts probably the best tree line skiing in Colorado. Being one of the quieter resorts in the region, you can often enjoy the pristine conditions with few other skiers around. The bars and restaurants around the base provide Steamboat’s most lively après, with the Slopeside Grill particularly popular, though if you are looking for a night of live music then head down to the Tugboat. The old town of Steamboat just a short bus ride away provides more choice and the 8th Street Steakhouse is great for big social groups. Cat skiing, ice skating and snowmobiling are also available to create the perfect mix off the slopes. The ski resort of Steamboat lies against the western ridge of the Continental Divide in the heart of the Rocky Mountains approximately 160 miles from Denver. Skiing in Steamboat offers 165 trails on nearly 3000 acres of terrain over six peaks and is the oldest ski area in Colorado. The term Champagne Powder was invented here. Steamboat gets an annual average of 335 inches of snow and covers 3000 acres within the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forest. It has a 3700-foot vertical drop and 142 ski and snowboard trails as well as an exciting snow park.
The town got its name in 1865 when a trio of French fur trappers heard what they thought sounded like the chugging of a paddle wheel steamer. What the trappers found was a bubbling mineral spring. Put the two together and Steamboat Springs took its place in the history books.
Whoever designed the town allowed enough room on the street so cattle could be driven straight through. Steamboat's western authenticity can be seen in the working cattle ranches that still surround the resort and the ranchers who still go about their daily business in cowboy boots and Stetsons.
At an elevation of 7000 feet, Steamboat is actually a complete mountain range comprising of Mount Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak and Christie Peak, offering a diversity of trails for all levels of ability. The ski resort of Steamboat is perhaps best known as the birthplace of organised skiing in Colorado. Although miners, ranchers and mail carriers used primitive skis as a means of transportation as early as the late 1880s, it wasn't until the first ski jump was built here in 1914 that skiing began to be considered as a recreational sport. Steamboat has sent 69 athletes to the Winter Olympics since 1932, more than any other town in North America.
There are two main areas, the original downtown area, dating back to the end of the last century, with its own authentic cowboy atmosphere and the more modern village area just at the foot of the ski lifts. Both areas have a wide choice of bars, shops and restaurants and are only 8 minutes' shuttle ride apart.
