Val d'Isere Resort overview |
 |
Val d’Isère is a fantastic and beautiful resort; it definitely lives up to its reputation. Coming up the road to Val D’Isère from Bourg St. Maurice, you will first arrive in La Daille, which isn’t the most attractive part of Val D’Isere but it is convenient for access to the slopes. Val D’Isere itself is big and busy but it’s very attractive and the addition of wood and stone-cladding and the sparkly fairy lights make for a welcoming atmosphere. There are some good bus services to get you to the main lift stations so the location of your accommodation in this respect is not too important. If, however, you are keen to sample the wonderful nightlife in Val D’Isère the bus service in the evening isn’t quite so efficient so you might want to check whether you are within walking distance of the bars. Val D’Isère can appear more British than French, but this is only a slight grievance and shouldn’t take away from this wonderful resort. Ste-Foy is a just a short car or bus journey away, and is well worth a day trip (if you have bought a 6 day pass for Val D’Isère you will have 50% off a Ste-Foy pass). There are only 4 ski lifts in the resort but these lifts give you access to some of the best off-piste terrain around.
The skiing in the Espace Killy (combining Val D’Isère and Tignes) is one of the biggest and best ski areas in the Alps. There are 300km of marked runs: 20 green, 60 blue, 35 red and 16 black, and the terrain caters for all. The three sectors of Val D’Isère’s slopes are Bellevarde (home to the legendary Face run), Solaise, a sunny area perfect for intermediates, and Le Fornet, which has beautiful views and great freeriding potential.
Activities in Val D’Isère include driving on ice, driving a team of huskies, ice skating, scenic helicopter flights, sports, rock climbing, and swimming. You could also visit a health spa, take a yoga class or simply go shopping on Val D’Isère’s great high street. Events in Val D’Isère include the Alpine Skiing World Cup event, the XBOX Big Day Out, La Scara, the Val D’Isère classical music festival, the Adventure and Discovery Film Festival and is Musicaval Music Festival. Val D’Isère has also been chosen to host the 2009 World Alpine Skiing Championships.
